Keep Your Baby Occupied With A Discovery Box
In my previous post – The 3 Things That Occupy My 11-Month Old for Hours – I mentioned our family’s use of the Discovery Box. Basically, it’s a decent-sized box with a flip top that is stuffed with toys. Like this one:
We discovered this concept completely by accident, as we originally just used this box to keep all his toys from being scattered all over the living room floor all the time. When he went to take these toys out for the first time, we realized this a GREAT STRATEGY for occupying him. It implemented toy rotation easily AND helped him focus on 1 or 2 toys at a time.

Benefit #1 – Occupying the Child
Kaiden has a BLAST taking these toys out one by one and then surveying what he found. Hopefully one day he’ll love putting them all back into the box as well.
Benefit #2 – Easy Toy Rotation
Every week or so we switch out the toys in his discovery box and it’s like a new treasure chest adventure every time. He never gets bored and almost gets MORE excited when he comes across a toy he hasn’t seen in a while.
Benefit #3 – Improves Focus & Attention Span
With all the toys laid out across the living room floor – it seemed like he had no idea what to play with. He would just hop back and forth constantly. As I watched him pull toys out of the discovery box, I saw him actually making choices of which ones to play with. It’s almost as if the one-by-one approach helps him make the choice about what to play with and for how long before he moved onto the next.
What’s In My Baby’s Discovery Box?
So here’s a few examples of what we stuff into his discovery box and rotate around. It’s pretty much a combination of musical “instruments”, teethers and multi-purpose toys:
Manhattan Toy Skwish Classic Rattle & Teether
Fisher Price Rock-a-Stack & Baby’s First Blocks Bundle
Infantino Textured Multi-Ball Set
Happy discovering!
Right there with ya,
