A friend of mine added me to this “Crunchy” mom group on Facebook and for a while I wondered “why in the world are these moms ‘crunchy’ and how does that apply to me?” I finally googled it (let’s face it, I wasn’t going to figure that one out on my own anytime soon) and all of a sudden I was exposed to this whole new world of classifying mamas…crunchy, silky, and scrunchy. Sounds like we’re talkin’ cereal or peanut butter, but nope – these are real categories people use to describe mamas.
Crunchy is for those moms who are as all-natural as all-natural can get. I’m talkin’ homebirth, cloth diapers, organic homemade baby products, breastfeeding, baby-led weaning, co-sleeping, etc, etc. You get it. Then there’s silky—which is the total opposite. It’s as comfortable and convenient as you can get—medicated birth or scheduled c-section, store bought diapers, formula, jarred baby food, cry-it-out-in-the-crib method, etc. And lastly, scrunchy – which is obviously a lil bit of this, a lil bit of that.
I think both Niki and I fall into the “scrunchy” category, but what do you do with a mom who originally wanted to go with a crunchy method but ended up having to go with a silky one because of unforeseen circumstances? What if you’re like me and planned to go as pain free as possible, opting for the epidural (silky) but all because my son decided he would fly right on outta me, I had NO time for the meds and gave birth au natural (crunchy). I guess that’s why there’s a scrunchy category. But what if you’re ALL crunchy at heart, but had to have some silky in there? The point is ALL moms are different and contrary to popular belief, not one is perfect and neither is any category. And while Niki and I might find ourselves in the same “scrunchy” mom group, as mamas we are worlds apart – And that is a beautiful thing! It takes all kinds of mamas to make the world go ’round! So here’s a nice lil chart about us and our differences just so you can get to know us a little more:
